MENTOR

MOR Reading mentors have the opportunity to meaningfully impact the reading development of young students. MOR Reading is a unique volunteer opportunity that allows a mentor to volunteer virtually while creating a long-lasting relationship with a young student. No prior experience is required, as training is provided to all mentors. It is important that mentors are comfortable working with young children, recognize the vulnerability associated with oral reading, and are passionate about the goals of MOR Reading.

MENTOR ASSESSMENT

A mentor must submit an application form in which they provide some personal information and potential availability. This information helps create the best match between a student and a mentor.

TRAINING

Before working with a student, mentors must attend a 1-hour meeting via Google Meet. In this meeting, mentors will be taught basic information about literacy development, effective strategies for mentoring a student, the structure of a reading session, and how technology will be used to facilitate the student-mentor interaction. After training has been successfully completed, a mentor will be assigned a student to read with.

BEGIN WEEKLY SESSIONS

The mentor will become the “teacher” of a Google Classroom in which their student is enrolled. Mentors will post materials needed for the weekly reading sessions, student and mentor evaluations, and at-home reading. After scheduling a session time, the mentor will lead a 30-minute reading session each week via Google Meet and will have digital access to the student’s book.
